Feelin’ Low

Friday, March 28th, 2003

Storms still abrew in Cocoon-Land, a rotating wall cloud has been spotted moving to the SE at 20MPH and is expected to unleash a funnel cloud at any moment.

Coupled with some large hail and damaging winds, it is not sure how long the storm will last. Expect flooding in low-lying areas, along with toppled trees and power outages.

I’m also afraid I’m losing drive and losing the spark. Work isn’t all that exciting and I’m too busy with class and finding a new apartment.

For Sale: One Athlon XP 2200 OEM CPU

Thursday, March 27th, 2003

Ok, sorry for the “ad”, but I’m selling an OEM Athlon XP 2200+ CPU. I recently bought it, and it works fine, but I’d rather have an XP 2400+. Leave a message in the comments if you’re interested. I’m asking USD$100 or best offer.

FRAUD IN XML JOURNAL AWARDS

Thursday, March 27th, 2003

The following is an email sent to the Cocoon Users Mailing List:
—–
Hello Open Source folks,

XML-J 2002 award (and rankings) was stolen from OpenOffice, (and rankings from Cocoon and Batik as well) by employing unfair and illegal tactics. XML-J editor acknowledged on 12th September that they aware of the rigging, but later try to evade their obligations with shallow excuses.

We had noticed heavy rigging for Agileblox and notified to XML-J editors while the rigging was in progress. Please refer to Evidence:A and Evidence:B given below that was provided to them several times during past 6 months. Also, the first part of the Evidence:A was provided while the rigging was in progress. Response to the complaints (email dated 12th of September), the editor said not to worry, he had aware of it, and promised all bad votes would be removed in the audit process.

Cocoon Manual Progress

Tuesday, March 25th, 2003

Well, I had started out on working on a “real” manual for Cocoon over on the Wiki page for it, but then I realized that once I got beyond a basic outline, and started to actually organize content, it was going to be a big waste of Wiki space.

I decided to start writing and collecting data into a Word document (yeah, yeah, I know), but then that got to be a big pain in the rear since I was using it on my old iBook with a max resolution of 800×600.

So what am I to do? The docs need a major overhaul, and I’d hate to do a bunch of work only to have it all blown away. If I start editing docs in document-1.1 format, I should really dig up some sort of XML editor.

The Cocoon Docs are in flux right now anyway. Maybe I should just wait. There doesn’t seem to be much response to my proposal on the cocoon-docs list.

Maybe I could just write a free book like Dive Into Python and give it away. I’d love to contribute something directly to the project though. Sigh.

Anyone have ideas?

Aggregators: Please back off a little!

Monday, March 24th, 2003

Please set your news aggregators to check for updates no more than once an hour. I’ve noticed some aggregators pulling down my RSS file every 5 minutes without even checking to see if it’s changed. 65.61.162.*, you know who you are! :)

WikiLand 0.9 Released

WikiLand 0.9 was released. It’s a Wiki based on Cocoon, and is available from the WikiLand site.

Cocoon Docs Reorganization

Friday, March 21st, 2003

My proposal for the reorganization and consolidation of the Cocoon docs is located at this Wiki page.

It’s so easy for me right now, it’s practically writing itself. The Wiki makes it fairly easy to update stuff, and everyone can see it as I’m working on it.

Quality-wise, I’m using the PHP docs for inspiration. I’d like it to this to be something you’d want to print out, even though it would use all of the paper from the laser printer in your office… maybe I should write a book :)

Vacation in S.F.

Tuesday, March 11th, 2003

I’m going to San Francisco for the rest of my spring break (through Sunday), so there will be little or no blogging going on. I’m unsubscribed from cocoon-users and cocoon-dev for the time being.

When I get back, I’ll be unveiling my Cocoon frontend to MovableType. Yum!

Random Thoughts

Tuesday, March 11th, 2003

I want to dig into the continuations expiration code, and learn how the scheduler works. Then, I want to expose the scheduler as a full-fledged Cocoon component so you can trigger pipelines or actions or flowscripts at a timed interval.

I want to schedule Cocoon to fetch data (activating a pipeline) and insert data into a database (MySQL, Xindice, etc) at regular intervals. I know a standalone Java app could worry aobut that part, but where’s the fun?

Imagine scheduling something from the Flow layer.
