Live OTUG JSF Coverage Tonight

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Conditions permitting (free Wifi), I plan on doing some live blogging this evening, as the Object Technology User Group is hosting a talk on JSF.

As long as I have net access, the updates will come in as they happen at approximately 6:30pm CDT.

Watch this space.

JSPWiki Author: Compliments for Daisy

Monday, June 20th, 2005

(Butt Ugly Weblog via Steven)

You know, seeing open source projects like Daisy make me just want to stop JSPWiki development altogether. It’s simply just too good, and I feel like there’s no way I can compete.

Daisy will be a winner.

Steven replies:

In my opinion however, there’s a different type of rupture to be explored.

The world of the lonely hacker-for-love-and-passion vs. the one of business-supported open source development.

Without JSPWiki, Daisy would never have happened. So Janne, don’t feel frustrated: you’re one of the giant’s shoulders we’re standing on. Thank you for that!

Great stuff. You’ll never hear Microsoft thanking Apple for “inspiration.”

Cocoon GetTogether 2005: Amsterdam

Friday, June 17th, 2005

Plans for the 2005 edition of the Cocoon GetTogether have surfaced, and the venue is.. Amsterdam!

The Cocoon GetTogether will be travelling this year, in a bold and
unprecedented move to check the quality of ribs across the globe. Our
first stop will be in xxx Amsterdam xxx, during the first week of
October. OK, that’s hardly a adventurous distance from Ghent, but it’ll
do for our first edition abroad, won’t it? :)

My chances of going are slim, but they are marginally better than last year, or the year before :)

Apple’s WebObjects is Free — Sort Of

Friday, June 17th, 2005

The catch to get WebObjects is that you have to purchase Mac OS X Tiger in order to get it. So it’s not really free.

Another caveat is that you still have to pay for a deployment license, which comes with OS X Server.

From what I’ve seen, WebObjects already does some neat things that other frameworks tout as useful features, such as “reverse-engineering” a database and assembling a scaffold webapp to make CRUD operations on objects dead simple.

If I decide to play with WebObjects, I’ll be sure to report back right here.

Time for a redesign?

Man, I really gotta redesign this page, don’t you think?

CityPages Syndicates *all* content

Friday, June 17th, 2005

Neat, CityPages just announced that all of their content is syndicated as RSS:

CityPages.com is proud to present RSS feeds for all City Pages content including daily recommended A-List events.

The City Pages RSS feeds also allow you to pick and choose news and arts content by subject and/or author, as well as blog updates by City Pages staff members. In essence, City Pages RSS feeds will allow the reader to craft the City Pages content to fit their exact needs, whether it’s movie reviews, sports updates, daily entertainment recommendations, or content from their favorite City Pages writers such as Dara Moskowitz, Steve Perry, Rob Nelson, Britt Robson, etc.

Cool. I’ve been busy at my new job, fresh out of graduating College, finally. I’m building webapps, but we use Struts here, so it’s been a huge test of my patience. Unfortunately, the chances of using something else look slim-to-none, but I still gotta keep hope alive ;)
