Thoughts on Blog Comments & Web Services

I’ve been thinking lately… simply put, why is there no way to attach comments to a weblog post? I mean, there are some pretty big uber-aggregators coming out. Wouldn’t it make sense to expose weblog comments in an RSS feed (possibly separate) as well? Perhaps this site isn’t all that visited, but it seems that most of my visitors are using news aggregators.

Imagine if news aggregators were able to view comments attached to a post. And imagine if they were also able to add a post without having to hit a form on the server side.. they’d hit some sort of web service.. XMLRPC, SOAP, etc.

RSS is currently only being used half of the conversation that goes on in blogs. Think about fast the info would flow if people could see that there were new comments attached to a conversation in their news aggregators.

I guess it would sort of end up like site annotation, only the person controlling the web site would be in control of what gets posted. If I had Photoshop I could create a mockup of how something like NetNewsWire would look if this functionality were included.
